What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

The wrist contains eight small bones called carpals. Together, they form a narrow tunnel that allows nerves and tendons to pass through and control your hand and fingers.

When these bones shift out of proper alignment or when inflammation develops, the tunnel becomes crowded. The result? Numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain — classic signs of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS).

Two Simple At-Home Tests

1. Phalen’s Maneuver

Place the backs of your hands together with fingers pointing down and arms parallel to the floor. Hold for up to one minute.

• If you feel numbness, tingling, or pain, it may indicate carpal tunnel involvement.

2. Tinel’s Sign

Use a finger to gently tap the center of your wrist (just under the palm).

• If tapping causes tingling, numbness, or pain, carpal tunnel syndrome may be present.
