How Chiropractic Started

The history of chiropractic care is a fascinating journey that combines ancient healing practices with modern scientific advancements. Chiropractic care, as we know it today, was formally established in the late 19th century, but its roots trace back to practices of spinal manipulation used for centuries.

The Founding of Chiropractic

In 1895, Daniel David Palmer, a self-taught healer, performed the first chiropractic adjustment in Davenport, Iowa. Palmer was intrigued by the body’s natural ability to heal itself and sought to understand the underlying mechanisms that contributed to health and wellness. He believed that many ailments stemmed from misalignments in the spine, which he called “subluxations.” By correcting these misalignments through manual adjustments, Palmer theorized that the nervous system—and thus the entire body—could function optimally.

The first patient to receive a chiropractic adjustment was Harvey Lillard, a janitor who had experienced partial hearing loss. Palmer’s adjustment restored Lillard’s hearing, marking a pivotal moment in the development of chiropractic care.

Evolution of the Field

Palmer’s work was expanded by his son, Bartlett Joshua (B.J.) Palmer, who is often referred to as the “Developer of Chiropractic.” B.J. Palmer refined his father’s techniques, founded the Palmer School of Chiropractic, and tirelessly advocated for the profession. Through his efforts, chiropractic grew from a small practice to a recognized healthcare discipline.

Over the decades, the field has embraced scientific research and advanced techniques, moving beyond its early theories to adopt evidence-based practices. Today, chiropractic care is a respected and widely used form of complementary medicine, helping millions of people manage pain, improve mobility, and enhance their overall health.

Ancient Roots

While the modern chiropractic profession began with D.D. Palmer, the concept of spinal manipulation dates back thousands of years. Ancient cultures, including those in Greece, China, and India, practiced forms of manual therapy to treat various ailments. Hippocrates, the “Father of Medicine,” famously stated, “Look well to the spine for the cause of disease,” highlighting the historical recognition of the spine’s role in health.

A Legacy of Natural Healing

Chiropractic care has always been grounded in the belief that the body possesses an innate ability to heal itself. By addressing the root causes of dysfunction rather than merely treating symptoms, chiropractic offers a holistic approach to health and wellness. This philosophy continues to inspire practitioners and patients alike, making chiropractic a cornerstone of natural healthcare today.

Whether you are seeking relief from pain or striving for optimal health, understanding the origins of chiropractic care provides valuable insight into this time-tested and continually evolving practice.
